OPSEU CTAR Working Group Update #8
October 1, 2007

Union pushes for jobs as Ministry of Finance/Revenue downsizes

“An OAG-8 is an OAG-8.”

That’s the simple message OPSEU members on the CTAR Working Group are bringing to the table in ongoing meetings with the Ministry of Finance/Revenue.

In talks to date, the employer has been slow to find matches for OPSEU members as corporate tax work and the Ontario Child Care Supplement program are moved out of the Ontario Public Service.

An agreement signed in December 2005 allows for the “lateral transfer” of job-threatened workers when positions become vacant in other areas of the ministry. The employer is trying to limit transfers to areas within specific areas of tax legislation. The union is not buying it.

The employer had previously agreed that a Tax Auditor is a Tax Auditor regardless of the legislation being audited.  Similarly, the Union argues that an OAG-8 is an OAG-8 regardless of the legislation they work with.

About 200 office administration staff will be moved out of their current jobs as a result of the transfer of their work to the federal government.

It’s black and white. OPSEU’s CTAR Working Group members are Betty Marcheganio, Steward, Local 340; Marg Simmons, Job Security Officer; Kathleen Demareski, Ministry Enforcement and Renewal co-chair; and Karrie Ouchas, President, Local 340. Missing is Leo Herskovits, MERC vice-chair.
