Native plants make a comeback at 100
Lesmill
Volunteers,
in co-ordination with 1st Vice-President Patty Rout and OPSEU's Building
Services, laid the first two beds of native plants at 100 Lesmill Road (OPSEU's
head office) on June 26, with assistance from CAAT-S activist Janice
Hagan and her partner Greg, a native plant specialist. More than 25
staff members volunteered to work on this bold, green and highly visible
initiative at the
Energy Conservation Week meeting in May.

Guest Editorial on the GreenUnion Blog
May 13, 2008 Janice Hagan, Chief Steward, Local
561, environmentalist and a very familiar face around CAAT & Region 5 political
action circles has contributed the first of a series of guest editorials and
articles to OPSEU's GreenUnion blog. In this piece, she makes a strong 5-point
case for unions and union activists to take the lead on environmental issues.
She compares the work unions have done in support of human rights to bolster her
points.
The five points covered in "Why me, Why us?" include:
(1) Quality of Life
(2) Health & Safety
(3) Fair Compensation
(4) Employment Stability
(5) Unions Possess the Tools for Social Change
