250 protest closure of ER at Hamilton Health Sciences
HAMILTON - Facing closure of the adult emergency room at
Hamilton Health Sciences, about 250 people held an early evening rally in
front of the hospital Sept 26.
The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health
Integration Network is scheduled to make a decision on the plan next Monday.
The proposal is the first to close a major urban hospital ER
in Ontario. Five other Ontario hospitals face similiar proposals and
studies: Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Wallaceburg, Leamington and Petrolia.
Hamilton MPP Andrea Horvath told the rally that these
changes reflect the lack of democracy in the health system. She called for
LHINs to be elected.
With health care cuts rampant across Ontario,
communities are expected to converge Saturday on five cities where major
health care demonstratons will be taking place.
Rallies are taking place in Toronto, Windsor, Kingston,
Sudbury and Thunder Bay beginning at 11 am.
