“It’s not cricket”

OPSEU Developmental services workers to rally in Toronto Monday

Liberal image of "Labour peace" does not match the reality

TORONTO: Striking OPSEU developmental service workers will demonstrate in front of an international labour conference in Toronto Monday July 30 to bring attention to the need for a living wage for staff and quality service for the people they support.

The government’s much-reported largesse with cricket clubs and other cultural organizations, some with Liberal ties, contrasts spectacularly with their tight-fisted attitude to workers who provide services to some of our most vulnerable Ontarians.

“We have more than 1,050 members on strike because the Liberal government won’t flow promised and much-needed funds announced in the Budget to community living agencies,” said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas.

“The Ontario government is using the conference to tout its labour relations successes, while developmental service workers can’t bargain a living wage. The image of ‘labour peace’ in Ontario does not match the reality.”

OPSEU members will rally for quality care and a living wage in developmental services:

Who: Hundreds of developmental service workers including many from London, Chatham, St. Thomas, Strathroy, Tillsonburg and Meaford

When: Monday July 30 Members begin assembling 9:00 a.m. (Media - 9:30 a.m)

Where: 225 Front Street West - Toronto - at the Intercontinental Toronto Centre - one block west of Union Station

What: Annual meeting of the international association of labour relations agencies

OPSEU represents 6,600 developmental services workers across Ontario. Workers in more than a dozen more agencies have voted to take strike action if necessary to achieve a living wage.
